station 3

in station 3 there were two models set up. The first on is a cart on wheels in rest with two ropes pulling an equal horizotal force on both sides. the other model is a cart not on wheels with two different horizonal forces. they both have a net force of zero the second model is at rest because both sides are equal because of frictional force of the track on the cart so it is at rest.both of these models have a displacement of zero.

Both of the setups have two tension forces acting on them, one on each end. On the first cart the forces are equal, so the cart does not move, but on the second cart the forces are not equal. Why does the cart not move? The cart does not move because it is on top of a felt covered block. The block creates a static friction force preventing the block (and cart on top) from moving. The force of friction is in the opposite direction as the tension force, like the forces are pulling aginst each other, canceling each other out.
